In Mrs. Paul’s Words
“Here is a little bit of my story as to how I got involved in social work. In 2002 I started the school Nai Disha for the railway platform children of Asansol as an outreach program of St. Patrick’s, where I was the Principal. In this humble effort my sister, Late Sheela Sengupta, a dedicated social worker, helped me overcome hurdles in the initial stages of directly interacting with the platform children. We successfully started the project and it is now adopted by St. Patrick’s School. After my retirement from St. Patrick’s, I joined Sheela’s organisation “Development Action Society” as I was keen on carrying on with social work. Though I was offered the post of principal in many private schools, I preferred to work for society at large. After the death of my sister, in 2019 we registered an organisation in her name, called the “South Kolkata Sheela Sengupta Memorial Foundation.” Our work for the poor and marginalised continues in the remote tribal villages of Tardah Gram Panchayat.”

Our Leadership
Thousands of SPS alumni have known Mrs. Seema Paul as a biology teacher or as the Principal of SPS. Some even know of her passion for the underprivileged with Nai Disha (helping educate the railway platform kids and other kids near SPS). Less known has been her work with the underprivileged kids in rural WB after she retired from SPS. She needs advice, volunteers, and donors to continue operating and help solve some challenges. And those who can help her with CSR leads.
She is passionate about this and when we have spoken to her she is usually on her way to the rural parts of the state few of us have been to. She feels in her volunteering she is working even more than she did as Principal! The charity is named in the memory of her late sister Sheela Sengupta (who turned her on to social work) and has 80G certification.
